Review: "A Winter Wedding (Whiskey Creek)" by Brenda Novak
Synopsis:
Kyle Houseman believes he'll never find anyone he could love as much as Olivia Arnold, who's now married to his stepbrother. Not only did he lose her, he's been through one divorce and has no desire to go through another. He's determined to be extra careful about the next woman he gets involved with—which is why he fights his attraction to the beautiful stranger who rents his farmhouse for the Christmas holiday.
Lourdes Bennett is a country music artist. She's only planning to stay in Whiskey Creek long enough to write the songs for her next album—the album that's going to put her back on top. Her dreams don't include settling in a town even smaller than the one she escaped. But as she comes to know Kyle, she begins to wonder if she'd be making a terrible mistake to leave him behind.
Genre: Contemporary Romance
My Review:
Brenda Novak's Whiskey Creek series is on my always buy list and A Winter Wedding is the much anticipated happily-ever-after for Kyle. Fans of Whiskey Creek have been hoping for Kyle's happily-ever-after since the first book in the series and I must say that Brenda Novak didn't disappoint. Brenda Novak weaves a wonderful love story between Lourdes and Kyle, both dealing with feelings for others and disappointments in life. I believe those two met at just the right time for each of them and together, they healed the other - and they found love in the other.
The author weaves intrigue and heartbreak into the story - all of the aspects that make A Winter Wedding a compelling read. And its hard to say my favorite part of the story without offering up spoilers, but I'll just say "It's about time" and leave it at that. Well done, Brenda Novak.
The nature of the series would lead me to believe that this is the end for Whiskey Creek, but I can only hope that Brenda Novak introduces us to some new residents and continues to give us an opportunity to catch up with our favorite residents of Whiskey Creek.

Book Tour and Giveaway: "The Secret Sister" by Brenda Novak
The Secret Sister by Brenda Novak
Trade paperback, 400 pages
Published by Mira, July 28, 2015
Did she once have a sister? Has her mother lied all these years? Why?
After a painful divorce, Maisey Lazarow returns to Fairham, the small island off the North Carolina coast where she grew up. She goes there to heal—and to help her brother, Keith, a deeply troubled man who's asked her to come home. But she refuses to stay in the family house. The last person she wants to see is the wealthy, controlling mother she escaped years ago.
Instead, she finds herself living next door to someone else she'd prefer to avoid—Rafe Romero, the wild, reckless boy to whom she lost her virginity at sixteen. He's back on the island, and to her surprise, he's raising a young daughter alone. Maisey's still attracted to him, but her heart's too broken to risk…
Then something even more disturbing happens. She discovers a box of photographs that evoke distant memories of a little girl, a child Keith remembers, too. Maisey believes the girl must've been their sister, but their mother claims there was no sister. Maisey's convinced that child existed. So where is she now?
My Review:
This book is so much more than women's fiction, or a contemporary romance - its real life. The author gives us a look into the lives of Maisey and her wonderful, complicated family; and Rafe and his life, which USED to be simple until Maisey came along.
Josephine, Maisey's mother, is hard to like. I didn't like how Maisey kept bowing down to her, but in reality, its how she and her brother have learned to survive. The descriptions of treatments hefted on brother were disturbing - it's no wonder he turned to a life of mischief and drugs. And its a wonder that Maisey came out somewhat normal. The loss that she has suffered has been piled on and her wariness is understandable - but I feel bad for Rafe who got jerked back and forth as she worked her way through her relationship with him while struggling with her brother, her mother, and even her ex husband.
Boy, I love Rafe. He is sensitive and kind but doesn't just let Maisey walk all over him. He sets some ground rules for how he's willing to be treated, but also makes his feelings known for Maisey. I love that he is confident in how he feels and once he's confident in Maisey's feelings, he confronts what is probably the major barrier to his happiness with Maisey - Josephine. I believe that he earned her respect when he did that and Josephine is definitely redeemed in my eyes in the end, in her relationships with Laney and Roxanne!
Wonderful, wonderful read!

Genre: Contemporary Romance
My review:
Its not often that I'm really moved by a character in a book, but Brenda Novak has done that with the character of Phoenix in This Heart of Mine. Having read all of the previous books in the Whiskey Creek series, I knew about Phoenix in a superficial way, but she is not the person I thought she was. I'm not sure I can find the right adjectives to describe her but some of her personality traits would be: humility, strength, deference, meekness, fearfulness, consideration, ... there are too many to list. I loved how she was rebuilding her life and continuing to demonstrate to anyone who would listen that she was just there to have a relationship with her mother and her son and was not trying to disrupt the lives of the others in Whiskey Creek. Phoenix epitomizes "if life gives you lemons, make lemonade".
The primary focus of This Heart of Mine is Phoenix's re-entry into Whiskey Creek after 19 years in prison. She wants to meet her now 16-year-old son and forge a relationship of some sort with him. She is fearful of his reaction to her, but I was pleasantly surprised at the maturity that Jacob demonstrated, embracing his mother literally and physically and paving the way for her re-entry into Whiskey Creek. Phoenix continued deference to Riley and Jacob's needs endeared her to me. I saw Jacob as a reflection of the Riley that Phoenix fell in love with as a teenager, and a wonderful reflection of Riley's parenting of Jacob while he himself was still growing up.
While there were times I expected to feel sorry for Phoenix, I really didn't. But over and over, I felt sorry for Riley. I didn't expect that. Riley was trapped in the middle between his parents, his parents friends, his son, his group of friends, and Phoenix. The emotional struggles he went through while trying to navigate a path through his struggles, demonstrating sensitivity to the feelings of others but ultimately being true to his own feels made me empathize with him throughout the story.
We really got to know Kyle a lot better in This Heart of Mine and he was another favorite character of mine. His strength helped convince Riley to follow his heart and he was a true friend to Riley - and to Phoenix. I'm sure his ultimate love story will be as endearing.
After approaching This Heart of Mine with skepticism - often books this far into a series don't deliver with the same punch as early books - I was pleasantly surprised at how wonderful and different this book was. This Heart of Mine is a wonderful addition to the Whiskey Creek series and a true reflection of the depth of talent in author Brenda Novak.

"A Home of Her Own" by Brenda Novak
When Lucky Caldwell was ten, her mother, Red - the best-known hooker in Dundee, Idaho - married Morris Caldwell, a wealthy and much older man. It didn't last, of course, but Morris's kindness was the highlight of Lucky's life.
Mike Hill, Morris's grandson, doesn't feel too well-disposed toward Red or her kids. He believes they alienated Morris from his family. Even Morris's Victorian mansion, on the property next to the Hill ranch, wasn't inherited by one of his grandchildren. Instead the house went to Lucky, who left it sitting empty for years.
Now that Red and Morris are both dead, Lucky has finally come back to Dundee. She plans to restore the derelict place - and to look for her real father, who has to be one of three men named in her mother's diary.
That means Mike has a new neighbor.
One he doesn't want to like…
My review:
In "A Home of Her Own", we see a girl who can't live down her mother's past. And her mother's sins have become her sins: in her own mind, and in the mind of the residents of Dundee. No one is welcoming to her, except Mike Hill. I was thrilled to see how he was quickly to see through her tough façade to realize that below her tough exterior was a fragile girl who was desperate for acceptance. She wasn't accepted by her own family, including her own mother and mostly her brothers, and she wasn't accepted by her hometown. I was at first put off by the age difference between Mike and Lucky but quickly saw that Mike's maturity is exactly what Lucky needed. I kept hoping that Mike would come to his senses and stand up for Lucky publicly sooner than he did. Family pressures kept pushing on Mike from one direction, and his growing feelings for Lucky pushing on him from another direction - its no wonder he about exploded.
I was quite surprised at the hostility that Mike's mother continued to hold towards Lucky and that she couldn't see that she was foisting the sins of mother down on the daughter. And I was eventually disappointed in Mike in his continued acceptance of that behavior - he created a situation that allowed everyone to continue their shunning of Lucky.Amazon: Amazon Listing
In the end, I thought Brenda did a wonderful job of their happily ever after - I loved their communication at the end, and the Realtor was a hoot!!
All in all, another great story from Dundee, Idaho and I like how Brenda has begun to introduce other characters that we'll hear about their stories in future books!

"A Family of Her Own" by Brenda Novak
When Katie Rogers returns to Dundee, Idaho, it's not because she wants to. It's because she's disillusioned, broke -- and pregnant. She was going to make something of her life in the big city. Instead, she's paying a high price for trusting the wrong man.
Booker Robinson is the man she didn't trust, the man she'd left behind in Dundee...and the first person she sees when she comes back. But despite Booker's notorious past, he now has a successful business and a home of his own.
He's also spent two years getting over Katie. She's the last person he wants to see. But when her parents refuse to take her in, she doesn't have anywhere else to go, and Booker soon finds himself with a roommate -- one who needs a father for her baby.... Katie's vowed she'll never trust the wrong man again. But sometimes a man isn't everything he seems. And sometimes he's more....

Who doesn't love the bad boy? A Family of her Own is a great story that shows that first impressions typically aren't the right ones - both good AND bad. "A Baby of Her Own" by Brenda Novak
A baby of her own. At thirty, she longs to break away from the constraints of her life. Longs to reach out for her heart's desire. She'd prefer marriage as well, but there's no man in Dundee, Idaho, she's interested in marrying.
Then one winter night she and her best friend, Rebecca, go to Boise with the intent of finding a man for Delaney. She meets a handsome stranger named Conner, a man who might be able to provide her with the solution she needs...and the baby she wants!
Afterward she thinks she must have been out of her mind. But it's too late. Because she's pregnant. And because the stranger isn't a stranger anymore. Conner Armstrong is now living on a ranch just outside Dundee.
This is not my first time reading the Dundee, Idaho series from Brenda Novak. I was looking for some easy reads that I knew had a HEA from an author I knew I liked. Brenda Novak never disappoints in that regard.
My review:
A Baby of Her Own is a story of two people (Connor and Delaney) who are both feeling that they have no where to belong, and are fighting with everything they can to find that place, that family. Delaney has decided that a baby will give her someone guaranteed to love her; Connor believes he can prove himself to his uncles and grandfather with turning the ranch around.Amazon: Amazon Listing
The author gives us a glimpse, with Delaney, into what it was like to feel like she didn't belong anywhere, and as a result, she felt obligated to support everyone in her town because they took her in. In Connor, we see how deeply he has been affected by his, and his mother's roles, in their family, and the abuse under which he has suffered since he was a child.
The author makes it easy for us to want to root for both of them, and then turns Connor into someone we don't know when he realizes what Delaney has done. As his relationship with Delaney progresses, we see his feelings transition from anger to fear, and that fear continues long past the time Delaney's feelings have turned to love. It takes the fear of losing Delaney for Connor to get his head out of his, ahem, well, you know, and decide it was important for him to express his feelings, regardless of his fear of rejection and loss.
We also got a glimpse into the lives of several of the other residents of Dundee, such as Rebecca and Katie, and look I forward to digging deeper into their lives in subsequent books!
