Review: "Nobody But You" (Cedar Ridge) by Jill Shalvis

Nobody But You (Cedar Ridge #3)
Author: Jill Shalvis
Release Date: March 29, 2016

Synopsis:

After an overseas mission goes wrong, Army Special Forces officer Jacob Kincaid knows where he must go to make things right: back home to the tiny town of Cedar Ridge, Colorado. All he needs to scrub away his painful past is fresh mountain air, a lakeside cabin, and quiet solitude. But what he discovers is a gorgeous woman living on a boat at his dock.

Sophie Marren has nowhere else to go. She’s broke, intermittently seasick, and fighting a serious attraction to the brooding, dishy, I’m-too-sexy-for-myself guy who’s now claiming her dock. Something about Jacob’s dark intensity makes her want to tease—and tempt—him beyond measure. Neither one wants to give any ground . . . until they realize the only true home they have is with each other.

Excerpt:

She eyed the bench a long beat but did eventually sit, perching primly as far from him as she could get and yet still be close enough to grab the bottle.

Smart woman.

She took the Scotch and drank. Her eyes watered and she coughed as she handed it to him. With a sigh, she leaned back to study the night sky. Her bared throat was slim and creamy smooth. An unexpected temptation. Remembering the flash of pain and vulnerability she’d unwittingly revealed, and that for whatever reason he’d somehow added to it, he spoke. “I’m sorry.”

She glanced at him as if she’d never heard a man apologize before in her life. “For…breathing?” she asked. “Having a penis? What?”

“You were upset because you didn’t know I was a Kincaid.”

She sighed. “That was just me looking for a reason to be mad at you so I wouldn’t…”

She bit her lower lip, clearly not wanting to go on.

But now he had to know. “So you wouldn’t what?”

“Nothing,” she said. “It’s just that I’m trying to make better choices.”

“Of which I wouldn’t be one.”

“It’s not necessarily your fault,” she said. “It’s that you’re a man.”

“Guilty as charged.”

“And I’m off men right now.”

“And on…women?” he asked with admittedly more than a little fascination.

She rolled her eyes. “I’m on no one, but thank you for proving my point on men.”

“I get that,” he said. “But being off men doesn’t seem to be making you very happy, or sound like a whole lot of fun.”

“Maybe I don’t need fun.”

He understood that. He’d felt the same way since Brett died. “What do you need?” he asked, honestly wanting to know more about her.

Instead of answering, she reached for the bottle. He waited until she met his gaze before letting go.
“Nothing,” she said a little too quickly. “Everything’s…perfect.”

“And your glass is half full,” he said. “So you’ve said.”

But he didn’t believe her. “How about a game?”

“I don’t play games.”

Now, that wasn’t exactly true. Whether she knew it or not, she’d been playing with  his head since he’d first laid eyes on her. “Three truths and a lie,” he said.

She stared at him. “As in you tell me three truths and a lie, and I pick out the lie?”

 “Yes.”

She considered this. “What do I get if I win?”

“What do you want?”

For the briefest of beats, her gaze dropped to his mouth.

Oh, hell yeah, he thought. Want me…

“My first boyfriend taught me that game,” she said.

“What did the winner get?”

“A kiss.”

Definitely still playing with his head… “Is that what you want, Sophie? A kiss?”

Again she stared at his mouth before dropping eye contact and wrapping that eye-stopping pink robe tighter around her body. “Do you?” she asked.

“Hell yes.”

Her gaze flew to his.

“Problem is,” he said conversationally, “if I kissed you, I don’t think I’d be able to stop.”

Her mouth literally fell open. The pulse at the base of her throat jumped. And she seemed to lose her words.

He went on. “But you should know, I don’t lose. That means you’ll have to tell me three truths and a lie.” And he’d hopefully get to know more about her.
She closed her mouth to bite her lower lip in what could’ve been indecision or excitement. Obviously he was hoping for the latter. “But hey, if you’re not sure you can handle losing, we can just forget about it,” he said.

The challenge lifted her chin and put sparks in her eyes. That’s it, babe. Show me what you’ve got.

“Bring it,” she said.

My Review:

Jill Shalvis does it again with Nobody But You, the long awaited story that brings Jacob home to Cedar Ridge. A broken man, Jacob comes home to heal himself and his relationship with his family. But it isn't easy. The rifts run deep for all of the siblings and Jacob has to find in himself what he needs to mend the relationships. His character is very realistic, a truly alpha male who is emotionally wounded.

Enter Sophie. She is the perfect match for Jacob. She's a hot mess in the true sense of the word and there were many laugh-out-loud moments in this story. But she and Jacob are perfectly suited. She is stubborn, often to her own detriment, and that forces Jacob to work that much harder for what he wants. She's a wonderfully-strong woman who is digging herself out from some life-changing struggles, which leaves her vulnerable to Jacob's advances. Neither is looking for something permanent, but we all know how that works out. The struggle is real and we the reader struggle along with Jacob and Sophie as they fight for their happily-ever-after.

"His to Seduce" (Bears of Grizzly Ridge) by Elena Aitken

Synopsis:

Chloe Karrington has spent her life running from the idea of needing a man, let alone a mate. After all, she’s an independent career woman, a man would only get in the way. Besides, she’s never met anyone who was worth the time.

That is until her work as an environmental researcher takes her to Grizzly Ridge and directly into the path of the way too sexy, way too intense, Luke Jackson. If her instincts have anything to say about it, he is most definitely worth something.

Chloe’s determined to get him out of her system, something that turns out to be a whole lot easier said than actually done. But when she makes a discovery on the Ridge that changes everything and could ruin the Jackson brothers and the Ridge, not only is her professionalism put to the test—so is her heart.

Genre: Paranormal Romance (Shifters)
My Review:

I had never read a shifter story before the first book in Elena Aitken's Bears of Grizzly Ridge series. His to Seduce is the 2nd book in the series and equally compelling. A shifter book makes a promise of an extremely alpha male, and Ms. Aitken doesn't disappoint. Luke is strong and sensitive. While he isn't looking for his mate, he's open to the possibility, especially after seeing how happy his older brother is. Enter Chloe. She's not interested in mating, but everyone at Grizzly Ridge recognizes her for who she is as soon as she arrives. She takes her resistance to an extreme, risking alienating everyone on the Ridge when she does. She also takes her job seriously, affecting her personal life to the point she didn't want anyone else in it. She's a strong character, but there was something just below the surface that bothered me about her. Her overreaction to her discovery on the property was dramatic and a bit overblown-I was just thankful someone could talk her back into a realistic response.

The brotherly interaction was well done, indicative of what happens when you put three alpha-males in the room together. Their fierce protectiveness of their mates, coupled with their sensitive dealings with the women themselves, make them extremely alluring to the reader. The author has teased us with the story of the third brother, making this reader anxious to read how he finds his happily-ever-after.

Review: "The Promise in your Eyes" (Grayson Brothers) by Wendy Lindstrom

Synopsis:

A Heartbroken Widow Vows She Will Never Love Again — A Reclusive Millionaire Plans To Prove Her Wrong.

Time has a way of healing broken hearts, but not for widow, Nancy Grayson. She has never stopped loving her deceased husband Hal. For years she has found contentment in tending her family — until a chance encounter with the reclusive millionaire Dawson Crane pries open her lonely heart. The handsome and charismatic man reawakens her need for companionship and the passion she has buried deep inside. But each step that takes her closer to Dawson betrays her love for Hal. Is it possible to love two men at the same time?

Can she let go of the love of her past and embrace the man who offers her a second chance at love?

Genre: Historical Romance
My Review:
Another great read from Wendy Lindstrom. The Promise in Your Eyes shows us that you can love again. We fell in love with Nancy Grayson when we first met her in the Grayson Brothers series as the matriach of the Grayson family. She's a strong woman who finished raising her sons alone after the death of her husband, Hal. We fell in love with her in her love story with Hal. But after being alone for so many years, can she love again?

The story is filled with the rich descriptions of Fredonia that are a hallmark for Ms. Lindstrom's novels. We again see the generosity of the Grayson family - sons and their wives, as well as their children - as we ride along on the Sleigh of Hope. And we struggle along with Nancy as she fights her feelings for Dawson and chooses between her past and her future, her family and her own heart, and Fredonia and Crane Landing.  Emotionally-gripping, I cried tears along with Nancy as her heart pulls her in several directions.

My heart aches for Dawson as he puts it on the line for a love that she might not can return. Dawson is a romantic and sweeps Nancy, as well as the reader, off her feet with the intensity of his feelings. He's not hesitant about telling Nancy how he feels and he's incredibly patient as Nancy's heart feels pulled in two directions at once. Nancy's struggle is relatable and shows the very real struggle many women face between their lives as a mother and as a woman. It gives the reader hope for love, even in the autumn of your life.

About the Author:

I was born and raised in upstate New York. My seven siblings and I were as wild and untended as the land around us, nurtured by the rich, black earth and warm sunshine. We swam in a shallow creek and made forts in the corn field where I would lie beneath the enormous blue sky and imagine epic adventures.

Alone I would haunt the forest, sharing my stories with the trees. I would press my face against their bark to feel their energy; a deeply furrowed oak, a scaly pine, a smooth beech, all welcoming my skinny arms and childish cheek. Thirty feet in the air, I would perch on their limbs, feeling safe beneath their leafy canopy. There I would become the heroine of the stories I imagined. There I began my life as a writer.

My first attempt at storytelling was in English comp class at SUNY University at Fredonia. My professor, Melinda Wendell, told me I had a voice for storytelling and that she hoped to see my work in a bookstore one day. (Thank you, Professor Wendell!) I never finished that particular story, but in the messy, handwritten pages of my journal an idea began to form. While researching, I came across a Civil War memoir by George K. Collins and I knew I’d found the premise for my first book Shades of Honor.

My award-winning Grayson Brothers series set in 19th Century Fredonia echoes the sounds and smells of my childhood. Like me, my characters are driven to understand what it means to be alive to each experience and fully embrace the unknown.

While writing books three and four of my Grayson Brothers series I spiraled into chronic fatigue syndrome. Although I dabbled with a few projects during that time, I didn’t have the energy or focus to write a book. Like all adventures, there comes a moment when a person must embrace the unknown and leap! I took up tai chi to get myself moving again. I started kickboxing a few months later and eventually began taking karate. I’m happy to say that I have since earned an Green Belt in A.K.T. Combatives and have returned to vibrant health. Most importantly, I published SLEIGH OF HOPE and LEAVE IT FOR THE RAIN, books 5 and 6 in the Grayson Brothers series. More books in the Grayson Brothers series, and also in my new Crane Landing series, are in the works.

"Race of Love" (The Remingtons Kindle World) by Melissa McClone

Synopsis:
Harboring secrets has jeopardized Bree Winthrop's spot on the US Ski Team. She's lost her focus and drive to win. Her only hope to remain on the team is Riley "Ry" Guyette—the one man she doesn't trust. Bree must let go of the past if she wants to keep her dreams alive.

Ry knows what it's like to crash and burn after a ski accident sidelined him from competition two years ago. But his coach wants Ry to help a teammate regain her focus and competitive edge. Too bad he hasn't spoken to Bree in six years—six very long years.

Bree and Ry face a mountain of struggles. Will they be able to learn that forgiveness isn't the steepest slope they must conquer?

Genre: Contemporary Romance
My Review:

Race of Love is a great story of two characters trying to overcome physical and emotional challenges that stand in the way of their dreams. I thought the story was compelling, very realistic, and really drew me in. I could relate to both the hero and heroine and their challenges. The author did a fantastic job of teasing the reader with some of the emotional challenges the heroine is facing but making us read on to get the full story while the hero and heroine fall in love. I didn't think I was going to love the hero when she first introduces him, but he grows on you quickly and I could just see him grinning in my mind as I read about him. A wonderful read with the perfect amount of tension and struggle as the hero and heroine try to find their happily-ever-after.

The Remingtons Kindle World Release Day!

Seventeen Kindle World releases today! I have reviewed several of them and my reviews are here!

Review: "Love in the City" (The Remingtons Kindle World) by Zoe York

Synopsis:
NYPD detective Daniel DeCecco didn’t want to fall hard for his best friend’s little sister. But Lucy Sark has a plan…

Off-limits love is tested and honesty (eventually) proves to be the best policy in this standalone sequel to Love On The Record

Genre: Contemporary Romance
My Review:

This is a sexy, quick read written in the Remingtons Kindle World. The story of Lucy and Daniel is a "brother's best friend" story, which always includes a built-in area for tension that plays out wonderfully in Ms. York's story. All I can say is how her brother finds out is laugh-out-loud wonderful - classic. It is great. Despite her young age, Lucy is a strong woman who knows what she wants out of life and goes after it. Daniel is a bit more elusive of a character, as he plays his cards close to his chest, but he's a great, brooding, sensitive character that I really like. In addition, you get a quick check-in with Tessa and Griffin from the author's first Kindle World novella - Love on the Record.

About the Author:
I’m a busy working mom of two young boys, and for as long as I can remember, I have been a voracious romance reader. In early 2012, I got an idea for a novel. Then another, and another. My Google Drive account exploded with outlines and chunks of text and character bibles.

Over Christmas, I started a holiday novella. By the end of January, it was clear I was going to wander past novella length, and the story wasn’t limited to the holiday season. And it wasn’t just one book, anymore – it was also an introduction to a small town, Wardham.

Two years later, I can’t believe how much my life has changed. I published my tenth book earlier this fall, and have been blessed to be involved in the bestselling SEALs of Summer and SEALs of Winter boxed sets with some of my favourite author friends.

Review: "City of Love" (The Remingtons Kindle World) by Kaira Rouda

Synopsis:

Her heart is empty in the new life she’s living.

Charlotte and Hale find an instant connection but a relationship is the last thing Charlotte needs and the only thing Hale wants. Can they find a way to stay together in the overwhelming city, or can they find their own city of love?

Genre: Contemporary Romance

My Review:

City of Love is a lot sweet and a good bit sexy. Two people who appear to be on the right track in their lives really aren't. Meeting each other puts them on a path to each other and their future. I love the characters and the premise of the story, and loved the peek into some sights of New York City! It really is a City of Love. Another great novella from Kaira Rouda.

Review: "Revived by Love" (The Remingtons Kindle World) by Stacy Eaton

Synopsis:

A New Year’s Kiss with a stranger will turn Pediatrician Mark Ellis’s world upside down. Even more so when he is called into the hospital for a drowning victim and finds out it is the son of the woman who changed everything for him.

Joanne Ward is done with her husband and his cheating ways. A single kiss with a man she doesn’t know seals the deal and the divorce papers are served. When her son falls through ice and is clinging to life she comes face to face with the man who gave her the inner strength to move forward.

Can the two of them find the sparks they shared, or will the incident with her son send them in opposite directions?

Genre: Contemporary Romance
My Review:

The opening scene of Revived by Love is really powerful. Two strong characters, drawn to each other.  Little did either know the path they would have to follow to each other.  The storyline was very realistic and I felt I was living it along with the characters. Mark is a strong, alpha character. Where can I get me one? I really enjoyed this story and the glimpse into the lives of former KW characters by Ms. Eaton. Great read.

Review: "Faith in Love" (The Remingtons Kindle World) by C. M. Albert

Synopsis:

Celeste St. Angelo left the bright lights and big city for the mountains of North Carolina to open the next phase of her flourishing Angel Therapy business, a healing and wellness center. With the grand opening looming she has no time for distractions, especially love.

When divine timing sparks an unexpected romance, will Egan and Celeste be able to leave their troubled pasts behind and find the courage to have a little faith in love?

Genre: Contemporary Romance
My Review:

Faith in Love is one of the most unique books I've read in a long time. The author weaves Christian faith with eastern healing, yoga, and a bit of mysticism in an intriguing way. The hero and heroine are both in a place in their life that they aren't ready for someone else, but the universe has other plans. The characters are well developed with a backstory that is unveiled to the reader over time, making me want to read faster to find out what is making the characters tick. The author eloquently describes the heroine's site in North Carolina to the point that I could picture the peaceful paths through the woods perfectly in my mind. Don't let the title fool you--this is a steamy romance that creates sexual tension between the characters from the moment they meet. A great addition to the Remingtons Kindle World and a great first release for the author.

Review: "Pitching for Love" (The Remingtons Kindle World) by Amy Manemann

Synopsis:
Tough as nails publicist, Mia Scott, has built her career by dodging the advances from her elite clientele. Her number one rule; never mix business with pleasure. Until a split second decision leads her to a night of unbridled passion -- and the morning after blues when she discovers the man she spent an amazing night with is her newest client.

Professional baseball pitcher, Evan Ahrens, knows he messed up, and messed up royally. One mistake on the field puts him on thin ice with the league and lands him a new PR rep to fix his soiled image. He goes to NightCaps to toss back a few drinks and blow off some steam -- and meets his match in a feisty dark haired woman who takes him to heights he's never been. There's only one problem -- she's his new publicist, and she's made it clear there will be no repeat performances.

A battle of wills gives way to uncontrollable passion as Mia fights her growing feelings to keep things professional, while Evan decides for once in his life he wants something more. The game just went from saving his career, to pitching for love.

Genre: Contemporary Romance

My Review:

Pitching for Love has two great characters - a strong female heroine and an extremely alpha male. Add in a little bit of baseball - my favorite sport - and you have a hit. Ms. Manemann brings her characters to life on the pages of Pitching for Love. I love how the hero and heroine have a hot hookup at the beginning of the book, neither knowing who the other is, and both only wanting a one-night stand. I love how the reader knew what neither of them did and we could watch their collision course happen in front of their eyes. Little did either know how intertwined their lives would become, and they spend the rest of the book trying to navigate a "strictly professional" relationship when both of them would rather explore their inevitable feelings for each other. I love how the author shows the "other side" of professional sports with the hero's philanthropy. A great addition to The Remingtons Kindle Worlds!
