Synopsis:

Madison Alcott left her Laguna Beach childhood in the past as soon as she could, never imagining she’d be forced to return. Caring for her ill mother and holding down a high-pressure position at the best resort in town, Madison’s life is as good as it could ever be in Laguna Beach. And blissfully, nobody knows her as Holly anymore, the name she used on television. Everything changes when her high school boyfriend appears in the lobby. He was the reason she’d left Laguna in the first place when he humiliated her on national television.

Josh Welsh’s star has been dimming ever since he shot to fame as the high school heartthrob on the reality TV series Laguna Nights. Hoping to reignite his career, he agreed to host a travel show, with the first episode shooting in his old hometown of Laguna Beach. Of all the negative scenarios associated with filming in Laguna, Josh hadn’t calculated a run-in with Madison, or that the same deep connection he felt for her in high school would still be there.

Madison and Josh’s reality TV relationship exploded years ago but when the new series forces them together, they must face Laguna Nights past and present.

Reviews: "SEALs undone" (7 novellas, short stories) by Zoe York

SEALs Undone: 7 Novella from author Zoe York
Over the past year or so, author Zoe York has written a series of novellas about Navy SEALs, tough "alpha men" who come completely undone because of a woman - THE woman! Some were originally issued in box sets, others started as a short story and were expanded to a full novella length - and one is poised to become a full-length novella later this summer!

Each is full of romance and sexy, sultry scenes between the hero and his heroine. The intimate scenes are quite detailed, so they are not for the faint of heart. But, you'll love watching these men fumble along as they try to navigate the waters of a truly loving relationship with a good woman!

Note: I received a free copy of Fall Back and Fall Dark in exchange for an honest review.

Fall Out: ★★★★ This is a great introduction to the "SEALs" undone. Drew is your typically alpha male at the beginning of this story - brooding, loner, quick times with fast women and no commitments. Annie strikes me as "put together" when we first meet her, as Drew notices how she's dressed, but we are quick to notice that she is anything but. I did feel that the need for drama felt a bit contrived in order to push Drew and Annie together, but from there, I liked the progression of their relationship. She continues to call it like it is with him, and he gets offended when the reality is that I think this is a case of "the truth hurts". Drew uses these little barbs from Annie, and his growing attraction to her, to question almost everything about his relationship with women. And in the end we find that usually all a man needs is the love of a good woman and everything else will fall into place!

Fall Hard: ★★★★★.  In typical SEALs undone fashion, you meet an alpha male, Jared, who keeps his interactions with women light and easy. Jared believes he's unable to have a commitment with woman because he'll always be leaving. His own childhood as the son of a single mother has made him extremely sensitive to the potential for a woman in his life to end up a single mother, and he has made many serious life decisions accordingly. Cassie is a strong woman coming out on the other side of a bad marriage followed by a bad relationship. I love how she has decided that she no longer wants to be in the "friend" zone with Jared but is frustrated with her inability to convey her needs and desires to Jared. Little did she know he was suffering from a similar frustration. It was fun to watch them navigate through feelings neither one of them knew how to deal with for the other, and throw in a wrench that Cassie didn't see coming (and neither did we - something you'd NEVER expect from a Navy SEAL) and it creates a wonderful beginning of a relationship between Jared and Cassie.

Fall Away: ★★★1/2 Fall Away is the story of Patrick, or Trick, and Gaby. This is not one of my more favorite books in the SEALs Undone series. While this story focuses on the development of Trick and Gaby's relationship, as all of them do, it doesn't seem to have much more of to the storyline. Trick is struggling with what appears to be PTSD, but it's barely touched on and it doesn't seem very significant. There was little to no strife between the couple throughout the development of their relationship, except for Gaby's struggle with knowing Trick was "with" her roommate. She uses that as the excuse to not have "sex", but honestly, all they don't have is intercourse - they do everything else, so it seems a bit of a contrived stressor. I did enjoy how Trick come through at the end with Gaby.

Fall Deep: ★★★★★. Fall Deep may be my favorite SEALs Undone story. I love the way that Piper and Miles meet - both out of their element in a foreign country. It is the romantic fantasy of so many women to meet a handsome man overseas - little did she know that he was really right around the corner.  I think what I like about this one the most is that Piper and Miles get to know each other over email and phone calls and texts because of their separation. It makes for them really getting to know each other before they get intimate, and I think that's why I liked this book the most. I love the theme in all of these books of big, strong men remaining "alpha males" (completely) but being turned on their ear by the women in their lives and this book has that in spades.

Fall Fast: ★★★★ What a cute but TEASING short story. In typical Zoe York fashion, this is a sexy, sultry story of two unlikely lovers. The author introduces us to Nathan and Emme as they are stranded at the airport and agree to a meal together, a meal that turns into a private conversation in a quiet corner of the airport and ultimately an invitation to "share" a room while stranded overnight. The author definitely leaves us wanting more, which is OK because it will be expanded from a short story into a full novella later this month. In the meantime, its an exclusive offering for newsletter subscribers, so sign up for her newsletter here to get your copy - Newsletter signup!

Fall Back: ★★★★★The Navy SEALs have such a wonderful network for their men to meet the women of their dreams, and it is no different in Fall Back. Cade is an intuitive character - even before he officially met Melissa, he could read her, or so he thought! What he is reading is her blocking herself off from feeling, or expressing those feelings. Melissa really is a bit neurotic and Cade is incredibly sensitive and empathetic towards that. Early on, in the narrative, we see that he has formed an immediate interest in her but senses that he has to be careful how he approaches her because she seems to spook easily. I like how, over time, Melissa is able to open up to Cade and tell him the secrets that she's holding in - because he has expressed that being open is important to him. He goes into this relationship with an intense purpose from the beginning, and while he says he isn't looking to get married right now, we can all tell better from his words and actions. He may be an alpha male, but he is not brooding - he can be sensitive and has a great sense of humor, knows what he wants when he sees it and pursues it with a deliberate but not overbearing purpose. He is able to bring out the best in Melissa and get her to open up to him, and to love. The sex scenes are really quite hot in this book, with an added visual element - be sure you check out the cover!!

Fall Dark: ★★★1/2 Fall Dark is a first love, second chance book. What's fun about this book is from the outset, as soon as Vince realizes that the gun-totting, bikini-wearing blonde is Larken, he is excited to see her and immediately wants to rekindle a romance. Larken, on the other hand, is hostile towards him. It's fun watching them circle each other as they reconnect. One thing I struggled with is that Larken went from hostile to sleeping with Vince mighty quickly - I found it a bit implausible that Larken was able to flip a switch from extreme hostility to having sex with Vince, and then its like the switch flipped back and she was angry again.  Good thing Vince was willing to wait it out. I thought their poker games and bets were fun!

About the Author:
I’m a busy working mom of two young boys, and for as long as I can remember, I have been a voracious romance reader. In early 2012, I got an idea for a novel. Then another, and another. My Google Drive account exploded with outlines and chunks of text and character bibles.

Over Christmas, I started a holiday novella. By the end of January, it was clear I was going to wander past novella length, and the story wasn’t limited to the holiday season. And it wasn’t just one book, anymore – it was also an introduction to a small town, Wardham.

Two years later, I can’t believe how much my life has changed. I published my tenth book earlier this fall, and have been blessed to be involved in the bestselling SEALs of Summer and SEALs of Winter boxed sets with some of my favourite author friends.

Summer at the Shore
Seashell Bay # 2
By: V.K. Sykes
Releasing June 30, 2015
Grand Central: Forever

Synopsis:

JUST A SUMMER FLING?

Morgan Merrifield sacrificed her teaching career to try to save her family's bed-and-breakfast and care for her younger sister. She can't let herself get distracted by Ryan Butler. After all, the rugged ex-Special Forces soldier is only in Seashell Bay for the summer. But her longtime crush soon flares into real desire-and with one irresistible kiss, she's swept away.

Ryan values his freedom. As much as he wants Morgan, he's not ready to settle down with anyone, much less in sleepy Seashell Bay. But his code of honor doesn't allow him to leave a woman in distress-and she's in desperate need of help to fix the inn. It only takes one day working under the same roof and Ryan is already hoping for a lifetime of hot summer nights . . .

Genre: Contemporary Romance
My Review:

The authors create two very complex characters in Morgan and Ryan. Morgan is dealing with grief over the loss of her father and the aftermath of dealing with the financial situation he left behind. Ryan has reached a crossroads in his career and doesn't know what he's looking for, or even why he's look in Seashell Bay, but he finds himself on the ferry headed home anyway.

The authors do a wonderful job of creating an image of Seashell Bay, and the relationship between Morgan and Ryan from the very first page, painting a picture of Ryan's perception of Seashell Bay through his descriptions of the ferry and the island and his feelings of life closing in on him. But, ever the protector and the rescuer, his initial reunion with Morgan sets the stage for their relationship during his time on the island

"Hold up!" a voice cried from down the pier. "Please, guys, I really need to make this boat."
Ryan recognized that feminine voice even before he saw Morgan Merrifield running full tilt boogie down the concrete platform of the ferry terminal.  Her pretty face flushed and her blond hair flopping forward into her eyes, she lugged an overstuffed L.L. Bean bag in her right hand and pulled a wheeled cart with her left.  Instinct made him jump up and rush down to the boat's lower deck to help her.
Quote courtesy of VK Sykes and Forever Romance/Grand Central Publishing

Those two paragraphs really epitomize how Morgan and Ryan relate to each other in this story. Morgan is a hot mess through a good part of the story, never able to truly get ahead of the demons and struggles that are nipping at her heels, yet Ryan is always there to lend her a hand, brainstorm an idea, and be a friend. I don't think that HE realized it was more for much of the book. Ryan knew the attraction was there - it had always been there - but I truly believe he didn't realize his feelings went deeper until he was faced with not being able to experience them anymore. A previous long-distance relationship has soured him for long-term commitment and certainly long-distance commitment, a fact that factors in to the continued dynamic of his and Morgan's relationship being temporary - she is as committed to the island as he is to leaving it.

The authors character development is delightful. We get to check in with Aidan and Lily from Meet Me at the Beach and other residents of Seashell Bay, and get to know Morgan's sister Sabrina. My biggest challenge with the dynamic of the relationship between Morgan and Sabrina is that early on we were told that Sabrina was "challenged", having been diagnosed with a learning disability. But outside of what is clearly some anxiety issues, it appears more that Sabrina is immature because her family has put her in that box and she has stayed there. Many times Sabrina demonstrates her ability to make mature decisions and act accordingly. Her feelings were often "tiptoed around" when I felt that Morgan should have rather treated her like the adult that she was, giving her the respect of telling her the reality of what was going on, and what Morgan was feeling, instead of sheltering her from whatever bad news there might be. I wish there had been a bit different way in which the relationship between Morgan and Sabrina was developed but overall, the character development is wonderful and complex and the book weaves a delightful story of two people fighting their feelings that neither believes can result in a long-term relationship. The reader doesn't know until the very end whether these two will be able to find their way forward together and it made me turn the pages faster and faster to see whether Morgan and Ryan get the happily ever after they deserved.

Release Day Review: "Second Chance Summer" by Jill Shalvis

Synopsis:
Cedar Ridge, Colorado, is famous for crisp mountain air, clear blue skies, and pine-scented breezes. And it's the last place Lily Danville wants to be. But she needs a job, and there's an opening at the hottest resort in her hometown. What has her concerned is the other hot property in Cedar Ridge: Aidan Kincaid-firefighter, rescue worker, and heartbreaker. She never could resist that devastating smile . . .

The Kincaid brothers are as rough and rugged as the Rocky Mountains they call home. Aidan has always done things his own way, by his own rules. And never has he regretted anything more than letting Lily walk out of his life ten years ago. If anyone has ever been in need of rescuing, she has. What she needs more than anything are long hikes, slow dances, and sizzling kisses. But that can only happen if he can get her to give Cedar Ridge-and this bad boy-a second chance . . .

Genre: Contemporary Romance

My Review:
A fan of everything Jill Shalvis had written, I was excited to read Second Chance Summer, and I wasn't disappointed. It's always interesting to read the first book in a new series and watch how the author develops the characters and the town, and tells you a story while setting the stage for future books, and Ms. Shalvis does it masterfully in this book. From the very beginning, the author paints a picture of Lily as a "hot mess" as she is returning to her hometown - a hometown she has been unable to visit since leaving amidst tragedy 10 years ago. While she knows she left with her own heart broken, she is unaware that she left a broken heart behind in Aidan, as well. Their reunion meeting, while inevitable, is hilarious and sets the stage for the nature of the relationship between Lily and Aidan. Aidan is a strong but sensitive alpha hero, and we see that from his first interaction with Lily. Lily is skittish about being back in Cedar Ridge, and feeling guilt over the loss of her sister and the dynamic of their relationship. She paints all of her experiences with her long-held feelings of guilt regarding her sister and father, and hopes to return to Cedar Ridge, keep her head down and stay "invisible" until something better comes along. Of course, we know that can't happen as it's inevitable for her and Aidan to meet when she is at her worst. Aidan's reaction to seeing Lily again is wonderful and I laughed as they first reconnect. But, what I find most insightful is what we learn about Aidan when we see him alone with his thoughts, or when we see him with his family.

Jill Shalvis has created a wonderful family unit for Aidan - loosely related through a deadbeat dad, but bonded through love regardless. Through their family dynamic, Aidan demonstrates an unfailing loyalty, commitment and trust that Lily just needs to realize can apply to her as well.  Lily's background makes her wary of love, and skeptical that anyone is able to truly love her - so Aidan takes the challenge. In addition to creating a wonderful love story between Aidan and Lily, we meet a delightfully-quirky salon manager (can't WAIT to read his story), a strong mother (with a minor love story of her own during this book) who has "adopted" all of the wayward children of her deadbeat husband, and annoying but lovable siblings who love each other fiercely and question and challenge each other regularly. I also love that one brother is married, and fun marriage hi-jinks are factored in to make for a delightfully-fun introduction to Cedar Ridge. I can't wait to go back!
