Release Day Review: "Shelter by the Sea" by Elena Aitken

Synopsis:
He’s determined to leave his past behind. She’s committed to a new and better future. But a guarded heart and an inability to trust may be too much to overcome, even in paradise.

A mountain man through and through, Archer Wolfe never imagined he’d be willing to give up rocky peaks and pine trees for white beaches and rainforests. But sometimes leaving your life behind to start over where nobody knows you is the only solution. And that’s exactly what he’s trying to do and the pretty little blond in the tight tank top just might be the person to help him stay. Working together to run a charter business on her sailboat seems like the perfect solution for both of them, at least it would be if he could convince her to give in to the growing heat between them because it’s only getting harder to ignore the attraction between them that’s quickly becoming more than just physical.

Cass Cutler’s life is full—of nothing. Unless you count a dead end job and a pathetic excuse for a relationship with her boss—and she doesn’t. So when she gets word that her father, whom she hasn’t seen in twenty years, is presumed dead, and she’s the new owner of his yacht located in Panama, she jumps at the chance for a change. And what better place for a new start than the picture perfect beaches and crystal clear water of the San Blas Islands, especially when they come complete with a unreasonably gorgeous man who’s become the star of Cass’s very naughty dreams. And her dreams are exactly where he should stay, because the last thing Cass wants or needs, is another man in her life who’s just going to leave. Now all Cass needs to do is a figure out a way to keep their increasing attraction from distracting her as she attempts to save her inheritance—and her heart—before she loses everything.

Genre: Contemporary Romance

My Review:

Another great read from Elena Aitken, and a great introduction to a new series. I had to keep reminding myself that I knew Archer from her previous series, but we really get to know him in Shelter by the Sea. He's a great character with a lot of depth. He's searching for himself and doesn't realize that by meeting Cass, he begins finding himself. He's wonderfully sensitive but sexy and seductive at the same time.

Cass is a bit of a hot mess, but she's extremely strong and confident with a can-do attitude that I love. She approaches life with a positive attitude, even when everything is conspiring against. She and Archer are pretty perfect for other. It is fun to watch their push-pull as they fight their feelings for each other and what they think they want out of life.

The author introduces some wonderful, quirky characters that really bring depth to this story, from the woman on the island to the twins and Joe's ex-wife. When I realized the direction the author was headed with the three-day tour and the women on board, I laughed out loud. What a perfect storm of awkwardness for Archer!

The mystery around Cass's father gets wrapped up a bit quickly nearly the end of the story and while I was happy to read the resolution, I felt after being stretched out for the majority of the book, it was wrapped up rather abruptly. But, Cass and Archer's story is brought to a happy conclusion with so much left teasing us for future stories from Panama.

Release Day Review: "Desire After Dark" by Marie Force

Synopsis:

Tobias “Slim” Jackson has the perfect life as a pilot on Gansett Island in the summer and in Florida in the winter. He’s happiest when he’s in the air, or at least that was the case before last summer when he met Erin Barton, Gansett Island’s newest lighthouse keeper. Now he can’t seem to find his usual enthusiasm for flying, winter in the sunny South or anything that doesn’t include her.

Erin has been stuck on pause since she lost her twin brother. She’ll tell you herself that her life has been a hot mess since Toby died. After dropping out of law school, she’s flitted from one pointless job to another, existing rather than truly living. Then she comes to Gansett Island to take over as the new lighthouse keeper and meets Slim, who happens to share her beloved brother’s first name. That small coincidence is enough to convince Erin that she needs to spend more time with the dashing pilot—except for the fact that he’s spending the winter more than a thousand miles from her.

Now Slim’s come home to Gansett for the holidays and to hopefully pick up where he left off with Erin. He’s got twelve days before he’s due back in Florida to finish out the remainder of his winter obligations. A lot can happen in twelve days, but will it be enough to convince Erin that it’s time to start truly living again? Read Slim and Erin’s story and catch up with the rest of the Gansett Island cast in Desire After Dark!

Genre: Contemporary Romance
My Review:
Erin and Slim's story was teased in the last novel from Gansett Island and I was pleased to finally read their story. I have to tell you - that lighthouse must be magical because Erin is the second woman to find love there. Erin and Slim are both great characters. Erin is still living in the past - paralyzed with fears and obsessions that have only grown, not diminished, since the loss of her brother in 9/11. She thinks she's moved on, but she really hasn't. Slim is determined to break through the walls that she has put up and find a way to her heart. He comes to Gansett determined to spend time with her, not fully realizing how quickly she'd grab hold of his heart.

Ms. Force has a knack of writing wonderful male heroes, and Slim is no exception. He's wonderfully attentive to Erin and a great friend to the other residents of Gansett. But he doesn't hone in on Erin's biggest issue until he's fallen head-over-heels in love with her, and its a secret that can tear them apart - literally. But in true Gansett hero fashion, he deals with it perfectly.

The main reason this read didn't get 5 stars is that I felt there was so much jumping around between points of view. In order to update the readers on former Gansett favorites, this book must have been told from more than probably six points of view and it got to be a bit much, jumping back and forth between the main characters (Slim and Erin) and then the various residents of Gansett. As much as I enjoyed the updates, the various changes made it a bit difficult to stay with the story. Other than that, the story was well done and the characters compelling, and always a bit of hilarity to go along with the residents of Gansett Island, no matter where they are!

Blog Tour and Giveaway: "Touched by Love" (The Remingtons) by Melissa Foster

NEW RELEASE........
Touched by Love, The Remingtons #6, Love in Bloom

Fiercely independent Janie Jansen has always believed there were worse things in life than being blind, and she's spent her life proving it. She's moved away from her overprotective parents, built a life in New York City, and is one of the top technical editors in her company. That is, until an unfortunate accident turns her life upside down and she's forced to give up the very independence she's worked so hard to achieve.

Firefighter Boyd Hudson pushed past his tragic past and is weeks away from accomplishing his ultimate dream―being accepted into medical school. His intense focus on his goal while working three jobs has taken its toll. With a trail of failed relationships behind him, Boyd is painstakingly aware of his limitations and avoids girlfriends completely―a difficult task given his attraction to one of his co-workers.

When Boyd comes to Janie's rescue, she's forced to accept his help, and Janie discovers there's more to the sexy-sounding office flirt than one-liners. Their connection deepens as Janie heals, but it turns out that Janie isn't the only one who needs healing. Boyd's painful past comes back to haunt him, threatening their relationship and forcing Boyd to reevaluate everything he knows about himself.

*** THE REMINGTONS are part of the LOVE IN BLOOM series by New York Times & USA Today bestselling and award-winning author Melissa Foster. This 6-book hot contemporary romance series features alpha male heroes and sexy, empowered women. They’re flawed, funny, passionate, and relatable to readers who enjoy new adult romance, contemporary romance, and women’s fiction. While each book may be read as a standalone, you might enjoy reading the entire Love in Bloom series (The Snow Sisters, The Bradens, Seaside Summers & The Ryders)

My Review:

Touched by Love is the long-awaited next book in The Remingtons series from Melissa Foster, and she does not disappoint. The characters in Touched by Love are special, and their struggles are more intense than many of the characters I've read from Ms. Foster. Janie's blindness is well depicted and as I read her scenes, I felt myself using my other senses to "see" what she is seeing in the way that she was seeing it: with her ears, with her nose, with her touch. And Boyd is the best and worst hero for her. He's wonderful from the very first page; so much so that you wonder what kind of struggles he could have in his life. But he has them, and they have made him his strong, driven, over-protective self. Which is perfect for Janie when she needs it, but smothering as she seeks to reassert her hard-earned independence. His protective streak and her independent nature may be their undoing, as each does what they think is best for them and the other, not respecting the very relationship they have fought so hard for. A wonderfully emotional, heart-tugging, sexy addition to The Remingtons and the entire Love in Bloom series.

Release Day Review: "Ghost Dance" (Tulsa Thunderbirds) by Catherine Gayle

Synopsis:

He had it all.
And lost it in an instant.

The night Dmitri Nazarenko won hockey’s Holy Grail, he lost more than he ever bargained for. With a world of guilt weighing him down, Dima can never forgive himself for his tragic misjudgment. Turning his body into a shrine of past mistakes, he hides behind tattoos that memorialize his failures and a beard that masks his pain.

But London Hawke sees right through him. The fiery woman refuses to pity a man like him. No stranger to incurable injuries, London lets nothing stand in the way of living her life. Seeing an able-bodied man haunted by the ghosts of his past is a surefire way to trigger her annoyance, and that’s exactly what she finds in Dima.

When they face off, it becomes a battle of wills. Their constant bickering turns to an unavoidable dance between the sheets. But she won’t accept sharing a bed with the past for long. Will Dima learn to fight his demons, or will London leave him to dance with his ghosts alone?

My Review:

Ghost Dance is a heart-wrenching, emotional story. I've not sure I've seen two people more perfect for each other than Dima and London. London is loud and brash and pushy - everything Dima doesn't need in his life. He's punishing himself for something that happened years ago and his guilt is brought to the surface as he meets London, someone who hasn't let what happened in her life hold her back. They have an explosive, sexy, intense relationship - but steer clear of the deep emotional connection that she wants and he doesn't think he can give.

As much as I liked London, I'm so glad that someone finally calls her on her hypocrisy and challenges her to examine her own emotional health. She needed to go through the process of self-discovery before she was ready to be completely with Dima.

Dima has a sweet side to him that we see in his relationship with baby Harper and I loved seeing his scenes with her that were healing for both her AND him.

Release Day Review: "My One and Only" (Ardent Springs) by Terri Osburn

Synopsis:

As far as Dr. Haleigh Rae Mitchner is concerned, Cooper Ridgeway is more suited to a superhero cape than mechanic’s overalls. It’s just like Ardent Springs’s most upstanding resident to rescue a pregnant, homeless teenager and bring her to Haleigh’s delivery room. When they team up to help the new mother and baby, Haleigh is determined not to cross the line with Cooper. Not only is he her best friend’s brother, he’s a guy who deserves more than Haleigh’s checkered past could ever offer.

At first glance, Haleigh is no longer the girl Cooper pined for in school. The sleek, professional OB-GYN seems more out of reach than ever for this small-town mechanic. But the more time he spends with the complicated woman, the more he wants her. Who better than Cooper to prove to her that nothing is beyond fixing? Especially in Ardent Springs, a town that’s tailor-made for second chances.

Genre: Contemporary Romance
My Review:

Terri Osburn does it again in My One and Only. In this return to Ardent Springs, we meet Haleigh Mitchner, one of the most flawed and wonderful characters I've met in a long time. Haleigh has spent her entire life trying to earn the love and approval of her mother and everything wrong in her life can be tied back to that. The author does a wonderful job of depicting Haleigh, her troubled past, and her self-loathing. She's a perfect match for Cooper, everyone's knight in shining army. He came through for Haleigh years ago, falling in love with her even back then, and is there for Haleigh as she navigates the choppy waters of her relationship with her mother, fighting the demons of her past, and some new demons in her best friend. The reader is given a glimpse back into the lives of former characters from Ardent Springs, a wonderful opportunity to see how life has progressed since we last left Ardent Springs. Ms. Osburn creates real characters with real struggles that draw the reader in, wanting the happily-ever-after for them that they deserve. Another home run from Ardent Springs.

Disclosure: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

About the Author:
Terri fell in love with reading at a young age, starting with condensed versions of classics such as The Wizard of Oz, The Hound of the Baskervilles, and Little Women. She fell into Romance novels around Junior High and never looked back. Authors such as Judith McNaught, Kathleen Woodiwiss, and LaVyrle Spencer kept her going through high school, then she bounded into the 90s with authors like Julie Garwood, Dorothy Garlock, Johanna Lindsey and countless others.

Her bookshelves are lined with beloved keepers (many sporting Fabio covers), some tattered and torn but all filled with passion, love, lust, and above all, Romance. From the Wild West to Romping Regency ballrooms to boardrooms and charming small towns, her library covers the spectrum.

Terri makes her home along the coast of Virginia with an eye-rolling teenager, two fat tabbies, and a hyper yorkiepoo. In her nefarious past she worked in customer service, fund-raising, catering, and was even a train conductor. (In the mall. Not as impressive as it sounds.) She was also a Country radio disc jockey for eight years, which makes her one of those rarest of author creatures – an extrovert.

Terri is a member of Romance Writers of America®, Virginia Romance Writers, and a 2012 Golden Heart® finalist in the Contemporary Single Title category. Her debut novel MEANT TO BE launched from Montlake Romance in May 2013, with the follow up, UP TO THE CHALLENGE, out in October 2013.

Release Day Review: "His to Claim" (Bears of Grizzly Ridge) by Elena Aitken

Synopsis:

Gabriella Santos wants to start over someplace where no one knows her. Some place safe. A lodge in the middle of the remote Montana mountains seems perfect—despite the cold. Running from her life in South America, she expects ice and snow, but what she doesn’t expect is her immediate and intense attraction to Kade Jackson who is a sexy as he is ornery.

The last thing Kade wants in his life is a woman. Particularly one who clouds his instincts and challenges everything he’s come to believe about love and mates. But Ella is no ordinary woman, and she just might be worth opening up to. But before he can let himself commit, Kade must come to terms with his past, and the secrets that altered everyone’s lives forever.

Gabriella has secrets of her own and when they catch up with her, Kade must make a decision: Stay rooted in the past and lose her forever or finally allow himself to trust his instincts to save the woman he loves. If it’s not too late.

Genre: Paranormal Romance (Shifters)
My Review:

Wow. His to Claim is a great addition to the Bears of Grizzly Ridge series. I keep saying it with each of these books, but I just didn't realize how great a shifter book could be. Kade has been puzzling readers with his gruff exterior and rejection of his true self since the beginning of the series. Enter Gabriella, the one woman who could break through Kade's gruff exterior. I love how strong she is - knowing from the start that she is meant to be with Kade. He fights his draw to her just as he's been fighting his inner true self since we met him. His inner struggles revolve around his relationship with his twin and her choices in life - he didn't believe in fated mates as she did. Again, enter Gabriella, who turns Kade's life on its ear and makes him believe in things he didn't think possible.

This book is a quick read but a complete story. We get glimpses into the background of what drove the Jackson's to Grizzly Ridge and what made Kade the way he is. I've loved all of the heroes of Grizzly Ridge but Kade has a special place in my heart.

Review: "Ain't She Sweet" by Marie Force

Synopsis:

Charlotte “Charley” Abbott has gone out with every guy under thirty-five in Butler, Vermont—except for one. Tyler Westcott’s attempts to date her may be determined, and frequent, but Charley can’t stand how he acts like he knows her better than she knows herself. So when Tyler turns up at the running club Charley joined to train for a marathon, she’s almost ready to quit before she even gets started.

Tyler knows that behind Charley’s prickly personality and dismissive attitude is a sweet woman he wants in his life. And when Charley suffers an injury while training, Tyler is ready to prove that the perfect man for her has been right there all along...

Genre: Contemporary Romance

My Review:
Ain't She Sweet is the newest glimpse into the lives of the Abbott family. Ms. Force teased the relationship between Tyler and Charley in a previous book and I was anxious to see how Tyler was going to win over the heart of wary Charley.  I see so much of myself in Charley - someone who can be strong and argumentative and contrary as a defense mechanism. Charley faults herself for not seeing what was happening to her previously, so she's decided to protect herself from heartbreak again. Tyler is the perfect man to break through Charley's tough exterior to see the emotional woman underneath. I love how insightful and thoughtful Tyler is - he's able to determine early-on that something is driving Charley to be the way that she is and he's determined to tread lightly but deliberately. I love how attentive Tyler is to Charley. I just really love everything about Tyler.

Charley is a character that you love - even though she makes it hard - and there are times that you want to smack her upside the head. I enjoyed watching her transition as she grew to trust Tyler and open herself up to things she didn't think she ever wanted again.

I felt much like the residents of Butler when they were worried about Fred. I was surprised it took so long for Fred to make an appearance and I was a little disappointed that we didn't see more of him in the story - maybe he's been off mourning the loss of his first love (Cameron).

As with all Ms. Force's romances, the intimacy is steamy and well done. The characters certainly got creative while Charley was recuperating from the injury that landed her in Tyler's house in the first place!

Spearheading this trial run, Evie will work with the sheriff's department on a couple of its most troubling missing-persons cases. As she reexamines old evidence to pull out a few tenuous new leads, she unearths a surprising connection . . . possibly to a third cold case. Evie's determined to solve the cases before she leaves Carin County, and Sheriff Thane, along with his family, will be key to those answers.

Genre: Christian Suspense with Romantic Elements
My Review:

Traces of Guilt is another intensely emotional, gut wrenching mystery from Dee Henderson. While categorized as a romantic suspense, I would say its more of a mystery with Christian and romantic elements. There are glimpses of romance between the two main characters: Evie and Gabe, but the romantic story is not the primary purpose of the book. The mystery was well written and I found myself following threads right along with the characters, hoping to find the answers at the end. Ms. Henderson sends the reader down several rabbit holes, convinced of the answer long before the final answer presents itself. I found myself wanting it to be each of the ideas the characters explored, because Ms. Henderson presents compelling reasons why each solution could be reality

We meet a new cast of characters in Carin, Illinois and also re-engage with favorites from other Dee Henderson books. Ann Falcon. I just love her. From the minute we met her in her own story, through the many subsequent books where Ann makes an appearance, I love her even more. I love the life that she has carved out for herself, the relationship she has with her husband, and the wisdom she brings to each situation she's a part of. I see Ann as the voice of reason and the conscience of the characters in the story. She's a wonderful character and brings an additional depth to any story she's in. Additionally, Ms. Henderson introduces the Thane family and I fell a little bit in love with Gabe from the beginning. The Thane family is a great model family showing how a family can remain close even despite some fundamental differences in faith.
